National Literacy & Numeracy Week
LITERACY WEEK
A Story Sharing Safari
Teachers and students will explore and share their joy of books during Galaxy Time on Tuesday 1 September. Teachers will be reading favourite stories and books to their group and promoting the importance of literacy through a range of activities.
What’s in a name?
Classes will have fun exploring data about their names and discover the answers to many fiercely debated questions, including:
Do girls have longer names than boys?
Are some initials more common than others?
Do more boys’ names than girls’ names start with the letter M?
And the big one – what is the most popular first letter of a first name?
Join in the celebrations at home and have a family Story Sharing Safari and investigate the names of family members and relatives.
NUMERACY WEEK
The theme this year is Reach for the Stars. Students across the different year levels will be completing maths activities relating to their names. Students can add up the total of their names, e.g. a=1, b=2, etc. It will also be a challenge for students to find words that add up to a total of 100 exactly. Older students can have the challenge of working out the fraction and percentage of vowels in their names!
MATHLETICS
The challenge is on in Mathletics! The children have the opportunity to compete against each other and with students around the world in the Live Mathletics.
ALL grades can compete this week in the National Challenge in Mathletics for Numeracy Week. On Tuesday 1 September children can compete in Curriculum Mathletics and on Thursday 3 September when children log on to Live Mathletics they can also compete in the National Challenge.
