Our motto of aim high is embedded deeply in our pedagogical approach. From the first day of Prep through to the last weeks of Grade Six, our educators follow the same instructional model in all classes.
GIPS Instructional Model
At GIPS, we value students working on their own developmental continuum so that each student can grow and thrive. This means that all students will have their own individual goals that they co-establish with their teachers.

Because our instructional model is consistently delivered in every class, not only are our classes safe and settled but our students are making tremendous academic gains in their learning.
At Glen Iris Primary School, our instructional model provides a consistent, evidence-based approach to teaching and learning from Prep to Year 6. It is designed to ensure every child is supported, challenged and empowered to achieve their personal best.
Our classrooms are structured around clear learning intentions, explicit teaching and purposeful practice. Teachers carefully guide students through new concepts and skills, providing the support and feedback needed to build confidence, independence and deep understanding.
What Learning Looks Like at GIPS
Each lesson is designed to help students:
- understand what they are learning and why
- engage actively in the learning process
- practise new skills with guidance and support
- apply their learning independently
- reflect on their progress and next steps.
Teachers use assessment and ongoing observation to tailor learning to each student’s needs. This ensures students are working at their point of challenge while feeling supported and successful.
Explicit Teaching and High Expectations
At GIPS, teachers explicitly model strategies, thinking processes and skills so students clearly understand how to learn and succeed. Lessons are carefully sequenced and scaffolded to build strong foundations in literacy, numeracy and inquiry learning.
We maintain high expectations for all students and foster a culture where effort, persistence and growth are valued.
Student Wellbeing and Engagement
We believe children learn best when they feel safe, connected and ready to learn. Our instructional model incorporates wellbeing practices that promote positive relationships, emotional regulation and student engagement throughout the school day.
Classrooms include:
- predictable routines
- positive classroom environments
- opportunities for student voice
- collaborative learning experiences
- reflection and celebration of growth.
Supporting Every Learner
Every child learns differently. Our teachers differentiate learning experiences to meet the diverse needs of students through:
- targeted small-group instruction
- extension opportunities
- individual conferencing and feedback
- scaffolded support where needed.
By combining strong teaching practices with a caring and inclusive environment, our instructional model helps every student develop the skills, confidence and curiosity to become a successful lifelong learner.
