In our classrooms

Our classrooms have been busy the past fortnight with learning and connections.

Our grade 3 and grade 5 students have been doing an awesome job on NAPLAN!

NAPLAN

This week we commenced another year of NAPLAN. Our grade 3s and 5s have completed three out of the four assessments. I would like to thank all the students and teachers for their fantastic work this week. Our amazing NAPLAN results year after year demonstrate our deeply embedded pedagogical models in writing, reading and mathematics. Even though we do really well, of course we always want to improve. This year, our improvement focus is continuing to target the unmet needs of our learners so we can support and extend particularly in writing and numeracy. If your child missed a NAPLAN test this week, Debbie and I will be running make-up sessions next week.

Teddy Bear Picnic

Our Year 6 and Prep students celebrated an annual tradition... the Teddy Bear picnic. Check out some of the photos from the special day in the slideshow below.

Sustainability

The year two students are really embracing their sustainability topic. In the classrooms, they have started to learn about the six R's of sustainability and recently have been discussing repurposing.

To support their understanding, students have been creating something using used materials from around their homes. Have a look at their creativity below.

Preps

Our new Preps are settling in so well to our learning environments. They've now been doing five full days for three whole weeks! That's a big learning jump and we are so proud of them.

News from the artroom

Both Year 3 and Year 5/6 students have studied the artwork of British artist Julian Opie, an artist who has featured at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) recently. They were inspired by his cartoon like style of portraiture and the digital animations he created. Year 3 Students enjoyed painting themselves like a cartoon. Year 5/6 students painted their likeness onto acetate and mounted them on a more abstract background. These portraits form part of a range of new artwork on display around the school. Pop in and check out the talented artists at GIPS!

International Women's Day

This week we recognised International Women's Day. Below our year four students are learning more about female scientists, like Marie Curie.

In our staffroom

As a staff, we are working on developing a school vision- and we will need your help!

School Vision

During our professional learning for the past fortnight, we have been working on developing a vision. Excellent school visions are aspirational, representative, memorable, and succinct. First, as a leadership team we brainstormed and voted upon words that we want captured in our vision. Then, we did the same activity as a whole staff. It was interesting to see the overlaps. Next, Miss Hill and I will be liaising with our Student Action Leadership Team: Voice and Agency. They will be bringing together a focus group of students who will do the same activity, too. From there, our leadership team will start drafting sample vision statements. As this work continues this year, we would like your feedback. We will be holding family focus groups and having a community-wide vote on different vision statements. We look forward to seeing how our vision takes shape over the course of 2024.

Building works and staff carpark closure

Building works on our Year One portables are commencing 25 March. The staff carpark will be closed commencing 18 March until building works are complete.

Year one portable building works

The year one portable building works are starting on 25 March. We were the recipient of a grant to repair the roof, ceilings, lights and infills across both the Year One and Year Three portables. The Victorian School Business Authority (VSBA) is leading the works. Grade one classes will be moving to a new classroom starting 25 March. The current timeline is for the works to be complete week two, term two; however, there may be unforeseen delays.

  • 1J: Classroom is moving to the upstairs Prep building. Pickup is in the Grade One playground.
  • 1W: Classroom is moving to the Grade Three building, in the STEM classroom. Pickup is outside the Grade Three portable.
  • 1SH: Classroom is moving to the Performing Arts room. Pickup is outside the Performing Arts room.

The Year Three portable building works will commence in Term Two, date to be determined. We will let you know more as the project continues.

Available to help?

All furniture is being moved on Saturday 23 March to prepare for the building works. If you are around Friday 22 March to help with some last-minute boxes packing or moving boxes to our shipping container, we would love the help. Please reach out to our front office if you can help.

Please don't drive into the staff carpark

The staff carpark will be closed for all cars, including staff and service providers, commencing 18 March to facilitate works that are commencing on the 25th. We will have a shipping container delivered to the staff carpark to store our classroom materials and furniture whilst building works take place. We look forward to the carpark re-opening for staff and service providers sometime next term. Families should still be able to walk in the carpark.

Walk-a-Thon

Our annual walk-a-thon is 26 March, 2024.

WALKATHON – 26TH MARCH at GIPS

It is time for the 2024 GIPS Walkathon. This year the funds raised will go towards the improvement of an outdoor learning area near the oval, for everyone to enjoy. Once the area is completed, Uncle Glenn and our Student Action Leadership Team: Voice and Agency will help name the area. We ask that students dress up in their house colours on 26th March. Walk-a-thon sheets are going home with students today. More sheets can be collected from our front office.

The above image shows our before shot. We hope to raise $25,000 during the Walk-a-thon. We hope to use the money to reinvent this space with the goal that it is a safe and relaxing spot for children to have chats during recess/lunch or outdoor learning opportunities. It would include an expanded deck and outdoor seating. This money would also go towards the much-needed repairs of the tree screen and retaining wall.
